What is 24-hour ABPM?

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring uses a portable recorder connected to an arm cuff. The monitor is worn for a prescribed period, commonly 24 hours, and automatically takes individual blood-pressure readings at programmed intervals while the patient follows their routine.

Unlike a single clinic measurement, ABPM provides multiple readings across activity, rest and sleep. This may help the treating doctor assess patterns that are difficult to understand from one or two clinic readings.

ABPM does not measure blood pressure continuously between cuff inflations. It stores a series of time-stamped readings. The number of successful readings depends on the programmed intervals, completed monitoring time, cuff position, movement and recording quality.

A cardiologist, physician, nephrologist, diabetologist or another treating clinician may advise ambulatory blood-pressure monitoring when clinic and home readings do not provide enough information. Reasons may include:

Patient guidance during ABPM

Before monitoring

Wear a loose-fitting top with room for the arm cuff.
Inform the team if you have very sensitive skin or a cuff-related allergy.
Disclose significant swelling, wounds, pain, surgery or restricted use of either arm.
Inform the team about implanted or vascular-access devices in the arm.
Continue prescribed medicines unless your treating doctor advises otherwise.
Do not change medication solely because the ABPM test is being performed.

During monitoring

Keep the recorder and cuff dry.
Do not bathe, shower or swim with the equipment unless specifically instructed.
Allow the arm to remain relaxed and still when the cuff begins inflating.
Do not remove or reposition the cuff unless instructed.
Avoid heavy exercise unless your treating doctor specifically recommends it.
Protect the tubing from twisting, pulling or becoming trapped.
Record symptoms and relevant activities with accurate times.

What does ABPM feel like?

The cuff inflates repeatedly in a way similar to a standard blood-pressure check. Each measurement creates temporary pressure around the upper arm and may interrupt activity or sleep briefly.

Some patients experience mild discomfort, temporary pressure marks or minor sleep disturbance. Movement during inflation may cause a failed reading and the device may attempt another measurement.

Contact the service team or seek medical advice if there is severe or persistent pain, significant swelling, numbness, marked colour change, worsening skin irritation or another concerning reaction. Do not continue wearing the cuff against urgent medical advice.

ABPM recording limitations

The report reflects only the successfully completed readings stored during the monitoring period. Results may be affected by:

Incorrect cuff size or cuff movement
Arm movement during inflation
Loose, twisted or compressed tubing
Removal of the cuff or recorder
Insufficient monitoring time
Multiple failed readings
Unusual activity or an unrepresentative day
Device or battery-related interruption

A normal or incomplete ABPM report does not exclude every blood-pressure problem. If insufficient usable readings are available, repeat monitoring may be recommended before the report is relied upon.
